Presentation Description
Institution: The Northern Hospital - Victoria, Australia
Purpose
The integration of clinical trials into vascular surgery units is increasingly important to advance evidence-based care. This study outlines the early experience of a vascular surgery unit in building clinical trial capability, highlighting the processes undertaken, barriers faced, and key enablers of success.
Methodology
We conducted a retrospective review of the early developmental phase of our vascular clinical trials programme. Areas examined included resource allocation such as dedicated funding and staffing, establishment of a multidisciplinary research framework, and patient recruitment infrastructure. Specific initiatives included the creation of a dedicated vascular research clinic for patient recruitment. The primary outcome was the successful initiation of clinical trials within our unit.
Results
Several factors were identified as critical to the successful development of the clinical trials programme. Foundational education and support around trial governance and ethics. Collaboration with other clinical departments within the hospital enabled resource-sharing, most notably through the joint appointment of a study coordinator, which significantly reduced administrative burden. Additionally, the establishment of a dedicated vascular research clinic created a structured environment for systematic patient screening and recruitment, improving trial efficiency and enhancing patient engagement. Finally, the appointment of a dedicated clinical trials lead within the unit ensured consistent oversight. Barriers included limited institutional knowledge of trial processes, and competing clinical demands.
Conclusion
Establishing a clinical trials programme in a vascular unit is achievable. Critical success factors include early mentorship, interdepartmental collaboration and proactive identification of governance hurdles. Our experience highlights the practical steps that can be taken by other units in the early stages of research integration.
