For generations, RACS Fellows have been involved in providing volunteer surgical support to communities in the South Pacific. While the focus has generally been on service delivery, the broad aim has been to foster sustainable in-country health care delivery. The RACS Pacific Clinical Services Health Workforce Improvement Program currently sponsors Visiting Medical Teams (VMT) for volunteer service to 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. 2026 saw the first VMT for Vascular Surgery to Fiji. Unlike the service delivery model of Vascular VMTs to Nauru in previous years, the Fijian Vascular VMT had capacity building as its primary focus. This was made possible by the return of two Fijian Surgeons; following Vascular Surgery Fellowship training in Australia and New Zealand, respectively; to establish specialist Vascular Surgery Units in Suva and Lautoka. To provide the full breadth of Vascular Surgical care to their communities, these nascent Units have sought to •build a surgical team – with dedicated resident trainees - delivering open and endovascular surgery; •upskill local radiographers in Vascular ultrasound •upgrade podiatric and orthotic care to the overwhelming population of patients with diabetic foot disease. This paper describes the outcome of this year’s RACS Vascular VMT to Fiji, and the ongoing mentorship that exists for our Fijian Vascular Surgery colleagues – through personal contact, with previous training relationships, and through the broader support network that exists in Global Vascular Companionship. A scholarship program in vascular ultrasound training has been established, with its first award recipient to complete the program in September. Future mission trips to Fiji are planned to include podiatric and orthotic educative support. Our Fijian Vascular Surgeons are playing an integral role in “Shaping the Future of Vascular Surgery” for the people of the Fiji Islands. Their support in this endeavour is our collective responsibility.
